Five Essential Qualities for Successful Coaching at the Work Place

Coaching is about change. It is about developing emotional intelligence and conscious awareness. It is about the marriage of a person's potential with performance. It is about growth as an individual or as part of a team.

In today's fast paced world that organizations need to embrace change and move forward as quickly as possible the importance of coaching at the work place becomes more evident. If people in the organization are not coached properly and effectively they will not welcome change and its accompanied challenges and therefore leaders of the organization will have a hard time resolving the associated conflicts.

Unfortunately, many managers think that they are too busy to spend time with their people and coach them to excellence. They believe that if they spend their valuable time coaching their people to develop their potential and produce great results, they will not be able to perform their own tasks and meet their own objectives. However, these managers forget about the fact that when coaching is done properly and effectively the level of performance and productivity will rise dramatically and people will respond positively to sudden changes with little or no conflict!

A good coach at the work place can help an individual or a team get out of their comfort zone(s), take necessary action, overcome challenges, and achieve success. It is worth mentioning that coaching is totally different from mentoring. Coaching is short term while mentoring is long term. Coaching has a process while mentoring is basically the transfer of knowledge or know-how to others. A mentor directs people toward the right path by providing them the answers while a coach directs people toward the right path by helping them find the answers themselves.

Coaching needs patience and persistence and that is why not everyone can coach others. Following are five qualities of effective coaching that can bring extraordinary results not only to the individual but also to the manager as well as the team.

An effective coach:

· Cares about the individual or team because care produces trust and respect in a relationship. The higher the level of care, the greater the level of trust, and therefore the faster the success will be achieved. We show our care by listening to the other person attentively, responding to their needs, and serving them in the best way possible.

· Observes their behavior at the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. This is the only way a coach can deeply understand them and use the right tools, strategies, and questions for coaching them to the peak of performance and success.

· Asks powerful and challenging questions and assist them in finding the right answers. Everyone has all the answers within. Right questions will lead to the right answers that are waiting to be discovered.

· Challenges them for taking necessary actions. If they do not take the top priority action steps as a result of coaching the coaching process will failed. The individual or team should commit to taking action and the coach should monitor the progress.

· Highlights the wins and celebrates success with them. Taking necessary action results in success. Small wins will sum up to big wins over time. Celebrating small wins will empower the individual or team to move forward continuously, overcome bigger challenges, and achieve greater levels of success.

By developing these essential qualities and coaching employees in an effective manner managers can guarantee positive response to any change and therefore overcome any challenges along the way with little or no conflict.
