3 Elements Of Personality Impetus In Business Coaching

The "Ooomph" Of Confidence

Barbara is quite worried about the operations of her business. Her employees are technically- efficient and the company is earning money, but the workplace is like a war zone. Almost everybody is disrespectful and silos has ensued. Barbara knew she has to do something right away to spare her business from further trouble, and therefore devised and proposed a plan. But she was very dismayed when one of her subordinates said "Barbara's plan sounds dumb, I don't think it's gonna work out".

As the business owner, Barbara needs to have that "oomph" in her personality to assert and defend herself. To succeed in business and in any endeavor for that matter, a "power personality" is important. What does it mean and where does that certain instinct of strength come from?

What Constitutes The "Personality"?

Drawing a reference from Sigmund Freud's theory of the id, the ego and the superego, let's explore the story of the personality.

According to Freud, the id, the ego and the superego are the mental forces that comprise the personality. The id is the container of desire, driven by the libido- a collective energy of basic human instincts and the will to survive. Call it something like a seething cauldron of desire.

The ego, on the other hand mediates between the id and the external world. If the id is the child throwing fits at a grocery store demanding a toy despite mommy's objection, mommy would be the ego scolding or pacifiying her kid. She'd tell her kid "sweetie, you better behave, we're disturbing other shoppers here and the store personnel is going to take us to the door". Otherwise, mommy would reprimand with a stern voice, signifying that she's angry. Maybe buying her kid ice cream would do for now, the pricey toy will be a birthday gift if the kiddo behaves.

The ego restrains the id, reminding it that there are limits, or else, trouble is the consequence of its misdemeanor. The superego is what we call as the conscience. It's like a father telling us what's right and wrong, and we're guilty if we do something bad. The superego is the conglomeration of beliefs, ideas and standards internalized from parents and other authorities. It demands a faultless job from the ego.

The drive to survive comes from the id, and when we feel we are violated or in a quandary, the instinct to protect ourselves manifests from this aspect of ourselves. The id is the seat of desire and impulses, but don't give it such a bad rap. Without the id, you wouldn't have the motivation to seek for what you want and need. The ego channels the id reasonably, but it has to be trained accordingly to be able to do so. Then there's the moral sense of the superego, a distinctive trademark of being civilized humans.

Harness The Mental Forces Of Your Personality

Imprints of our personalities in the physical framework are formed in the ego and the superego. As humans, we have a compelling drive within us, but we have to educate ourselves right to be able to use our basic drive accordingly. Knowing ourselves and harnessing the mental forces that comprise our personalities is the key to a power personality.
