Why Do You Need An Ego?
As a leader, you need to have the right concoction of beliefs and attitudes to have a power personality. A "power personality" is not about being egomaniacal- this may be extreme. However, as much as we find many writings saying that the ego is bad, the truth is, we actually need an ego. And what is the ego?
Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, contended about the id- ego- and superego. These are the 3 mental forces that comprise the personality. Consider these forces pulling and pushing each other, creating the drama of our minds and the story of our personalities. The id, ego and superego are oftentimes competing with each other.
The Id, The Ego And The Superego
- What is the id? The id contains our basic human instincts and driven by the libido- a collective energy of our original human instincts and the will to survive. Call the id somewhat of a seething cauldron of desire, and it is like the devil behind your ear whispering temptations and goading you. Is the id bad? Not really, because without desire, the drive of the id, you wouldn't seek for what you need and want. Your mind wouldn't contain the idea of "ambition".
- What is the ego? The ego harnesses the compelling force of the id, taming it into something more reasonable and within limits. It puts the lid on the seething cauldron of desire. The ego tells the id: "hold on baby, you can't always get everything you want". The ego mediates and is the negotiator between the id and the external world. If the id is a really talented athlete that demands for a multimillion dollar contract, the ego reminds it that overpricing can oust the job.
- What is the superego? The superego is a relentless judge, constantly demanding a faultless performance from the ego. The mental force of the superego is what we call as the "conscience", and it is a conglomeration of the thoughts, ideas, notions and standards imposed by parents and other authorities, and it makes us capable of feeling guilt.

What's real in the workplace are conflict, variances, frustration and change. In the work environment, there are rude, dismissive and disrespectful people
How to deal with problem employees and high conflict people in the workplace? Through catch and correct which is a proven skill to deal with rude, dismissive and disrespectful behaviors in the workplace. Doing so, you need the id to express your anger, the ego to tame anger into assertiveness, and the superego to keep by your morals.
