Stopping the Anxiety Cycle
Description
To overcome your anxiety you need to learn how to break your automatic and habitual cycle of fear that keeps you stuck. By now you know what the cycle is and how it’s all playing out inside your mind. The trouble is, it happens very quickly and can easily become automatic behavior that occurs without any conscious thought. What’s critical for you to realize, is that in between the thought that causes your amygdala to react and your fear response, is what I call “The Pause”. There’s a measurable time period, maybe not a long time, perhaps only a second, but a definite moment in between the anxious thought and your reaction. One of your goals is to learn to increase The Pause and give yourself room to make a decision about what to do next, instead of simply reacting with anxiety just because that’s what you may be used to doing.

The Master of Delegation
Have you noticed how we rarely do anything on our own anymore? My mother likes to call me the master of delegation. Meet me. I am the type of person that buys everything from toilet paper to toothbrushes and dishwasher detergent on Amazon.com.
I have a lawyer, an accountant, a publicist, a graphic designer, a writer, an assistant, a cleaning service, an aesthetician, a hair stylist, and a personal trainer. I even had someone at one point who managed my online dating profiles. And if that seems like a lot to you, most people I know have gardeners, pool servicers, dog walkers and a variety of other services you may not even believe existed (sleep butler, anyone?).
I argue that delegation is best because it allows the servicemen to do what they are good at so one can focus on what they themselves are good at. But are we really doing what we are good at, or are we just spending more time distracting ourselves with less-important tasks like incessantly checking our Facebook newsfeed, updating our every move on Twitter and beautifying our mobile photos on Instagram filters?
In recent months I have found myself bored while driving (If I could afford to, here is where I would hire a driver) so I often find myself fantasizing about what I could be doing (again checking email, Facebook, jumping on a call) to just feel busy! Then it occurred to me that the problem is that I (like many others out there) are equating being busy with being valuable. And if that's true, then why am I delegating almost every task that I have?
Here is what I realized. Firstly, being busy does not always equate with how valuable one is. One can make themselves busy with a variety of meaningless tasks, so value every moment that you have and when you are busy ask yourself, is this something that really is helpful to my future and my life?
And lastly, but most importantly, if you choose to delegate, know its OK to have some down time. Life can't always be a frenetic power play game of who gets the most done first, or else we will all die of stress-related illnesses and family loses its meaning. So enjoy some time off and focus on those that you can't tend to when you are busy.
As for me and my need to delegate, I don't think that will ever stop, but I have vowed from here on in, on the occasions I find myself with free moments of time, I will enjoy my boredom rather than curse it and remember that time is something that cannot be taken advantage of!

Growing Down: How to Cultivate the Soil of Your Soul
Our attempts to pray, affirm, or visualize away all the bad, ugly, filthy parts of ourselves and our life are like a seed trying to pray away all the dirt -- which is made of everything that has died and decayed before.
If it could, and it succeeded, it would find itself sitting atop a rock, no dirt in sight. And when that sun came out -- the very thing that is meant to activate the life within that seed -- it would burn it to a crisp!
Instead, that seed naturally plants itself in the dirt. Buries itself in it. It doesn't reject it, it embraces it. It doesn't see it as a grave, but a womb -- from which it draws rich nourishment and begins to "grow down," not just up.
As the roots dig deeper, the shoots reach higher. As it descends into the darkness, it ascends toward the light. If you look at an X-ray of an oak tree, the root system is like a mirror of the branches, showing that what's below is not only as important as what's above -- it's all one.
Our culture has taught us -- and unfortunately, the self-improvement movement has only exacerbated the idea -- that the dark, dank, decaying parts are to be fixed, hidden, manifested over, or eliminated altogether.
And all our efforts to change, cover up, or ignore these parts have only served to make them stronger. What you resist, persists. What you fight, you fuel. What you can't be with, won't let you be. And like a monster locked in the dungeon, it eventually breaks out and wreaks havoc.
But when we embrace these alienated, judged, rejected aspects of ourselves, we discover they're not our enemies, but our allies. We realize that they hold new gifts, talents, strengths, and abilities heretofore unimagined.
That angry part of us, denied out of fear and ignorance, becomes our greatest source of power and protection, helping us transform from victims to victors. That selfish child within, covered in shame and guilt, when honored and set free, shows us how to finally take good care of ourselves.
All the dark, dirty places become the rich fertilizer in the soil of our soul that allows the seed of our potential to grow. When we finally relax into the ground of our being, all the energy we had used to stay on the surface becomes like the sunlight that finally activates our evolution.
There is nothing wrong with you. You are not broken or lacking. You were not born in sin, under a bad sign, or with bad genes. Everything you've been through and everything you're experiencing is divinely designed to awaken you to your true identity and fulfill your destiny.
Embrace those aspects you've been trying to deny or destroy. They are wounded children acting out, only needing your love to heal. Ask them what their lesson and blessing for you is. Ask them what they need in order to take a constructive place in your life.
Then honor their guidance -- and watch as everything you've been fighting for begins to emerge in ways that are beyond your imagination, without the stress and struggle of self-improvement.
If you do this, you'll discover a great truth: The self you've been trying to improve never existed. It was a fiction, born in the mind of a child -- while your real Self, whole and complete, watched the drama unfold, awaiting the day when you could recognize it.
Just as Michelangelo believed God had already done all the work, and his job was simply to see the completed masterpiece imprisoned in that block of stone and release it -- take time today to behold that masterpiece hidden in this block of mortal stone... and set it free.
Until next time, live authentically, love unconditionally, and follow your destiny!

Interview With Happier At Home Author Gretchen Rubin
Like many of you, I am a huge fan of Gretchen Rubin of The Happiness Project book and blog fame. Any minute now, Gretchen's much-anticipated follow-up book Happier at Home hits shelves. I was lucky enough to read an early copy of the book and absolutely loved it. Like its bestselling predecessor, Happier At Home is stuffed with wonderful questions about, and insights on, the intersection of happiness and home. I am thrilled that I had the opportunity to conduct this interview with Gretchen and learn 10 little-known facts about her.
ADR: Do you think you feel more pressure than most to be "happy" since you've now embarked on multiple happiness projects? Do you think that the pressure to be happy and feel happy is something that ultimately makes happiness more elusive?
GR: No, you'd think that I would, but I really don't feel that way. I have ordinary moments of happiness and unhappiness, and I don't expect not to feel that way.
ADR: Is home a place or state of mind or both? Did your vision of home evolve at all while researching and writing HAPPIER AT HOME?
GR: I think it's both, and that it's important to keep both aspects in mind and not overlook either. It's important that home feel comfortable and inviting, for mind and spirit. One thing that surprises me is how much clutter detracts from happiness. It's a trivial thing, but it really weighs people down. One of my Secrets of Adulthood is: Outer order contributes to inner calm. I work a lot harder on keeping my home reasonably tidy, and it has given me more energy, calm, and even creativity.
ADR: In HAH, you describe a kind of homesickness or anticipatory nostalgia for this "rush hour" period of your life (when you have young kids underfoot, when you and your husband are personally and professionally busy). What can all of us do to become more mindful of the present moment in the face of the busy-ness and push-pull of modern life and parenthood?
GR: I repeat to myself, "The days are long, but the years are short." It's so hard to keep in mind, but so important. Of everything I've ever written, I think this one-minute video I did on that subject is the thing that has resonated most with people: http://www.theyearsareshort.com/.
ADR: What is one thing that very few people know about you?
GR: My imaginary friend's name was Gertrude.
ADR: Given the wild success of THE HAPPINESS PROJECT, are you anxious at all about the release of HAPPIER AT HOME? If you have indeed felt any anxiety, how have you weathered it?
GR: With all my books, I've very much wanted to connect with an audience. I feel this very much every time, and I sure feel that way this time. It helps me, always, to reflect on how much I loved writing the book (I've loved loved loved each of my books). This helps me remember that whether or not the book is a "success," I've had a wonderful experience already. My JFK biography, for instance, didn't...let's say...succeed in the market. But I don't regret that book, because it was such a joy to write.
ADR: I am in the middle of my own Year Without Wine, a literary and existential experiment in health, happiness, and habit change. From reading your books and your blog, I know that you are not much of a drinker. Can you tell us all why? (Note: I am stockpiling reasons to continue living the dry life for the next five months!)
GR: One of my happiness-project resolutions was to "Be Gretchen." As part of this, I realized that I just didn't enjoy drinking. I liked the festivity and ceremony of it, but I didn't like the drinking itself. I didn't like the taste, and I didn't like the calories, and I didn't like the way it made me act. My tolerance was so low that a single glass of wine made me belligerent, indiscreet, and yawn-in-your-face sleepy. I decided that I either needed to drink a lot more, and get my tolerance up, or basically quit drinking - so I basically quit. I just don't like the side of me that it brings out.
